Christchurch, New Zealand, February 2014

The old cathedral is unusable because of the 2011 earthquake. Creative people have built a temporary structure to serve as the cathedral.  Look closely and you will see it is made of containers at the base. The beams and cross and some decor is made of cardboard rolls, like is used in storing carpets.

Everything in the cathedral is recycled.

One heavily damaged old building is left standing, although it is badly damaged. Many buildings have been removed. Several still need to come down. But people are making the area cheerful with flowers.

A lovely survivor building in Christchurch.

The ruins of the cathedral.

A living roof in front of the cathedral.

A clever container city makes a cheerful downtown, where buildings leveled by the earthquake have been removed.

Container city.
